ICU Softball Club Homepage

I made new ICU Softball Club homepage by using blogger and skills I've learnt from this class. I made new account and told my teammates both usernames and password, so that everyone can update. I put link to the club bulletin board, and it had RSS, so I added 5 newest posts on the column by using Google Reader. Here is the link. Please take a look!

S3 Tool Review: Diigo

Diigo presented by Rei

Diigo is the tool which you can save your bookmarks online, and you can share them. This is almost same as Delicious, but with Diigo, you can also highlight the texts, you can put "post it" on the text, and you can do discussion online. This tool would be very helpful when you do the gruop work. Usually it is really hard to meet everyone at once, but with Diigo, you can share what you found, what you think is important, and do the work together.

S3 Tool Review: GradeFix

GradeFix presented by Yukie

GradeFix is the tool, which organizes your schedule and tells what and how long you have to do to finish the assignments or study for exams. It reminds you to study by sending e-mail. I thought this is very helpful tool because it actually manages your schedule. If you follow the schedule, you would not forget what you have to do.

Lesson 6: Think, Explore and Explain

Think

Posted below with the diagram.

Explain

I was really surprised with the features of the Google Document that it is really convenient to make the report. In the past time, I was using Word and Excel every time for my work. Sometimes I faced the trouble not opening a file created by Word on Mac on the Windows' Word. But by using the Google Document, it has the basic features of the Word and Excel, and moreover, it is really convenient.
You do not need any special skills to use it unless you do not know how to use Word and Excel. It is useful for everyone whom using the Word and Excel.
If the teacher asked me to collaborate with other students on a project, I would first arrange the time that all the group members can meet outside the class. It is because I think it is really difficult to finish the project without having extra time to talk about it unless the teacher provides enough time for the discussion in the class.
I would directly say what works I have done so far if there is any chance to talk about it in the discussion. If not, I would barely talk about it.

Lesson 5: Think, Elxpore, and Explain

Think

The websites I visit regularly are ICU W3, mixi, google mail, Asahi.com, softball team's bulletin board, and the soccer site. I usually visit some of them daily, and others few tims a week. I can see the up to date for the sites I usually visit, and for other sites I recieve an mail magazine such as Asahi.com and the soccer site. If it is the site which does not have mail magazine, it is hard for me to see new information, for example the ICU softball team's online bulletin board.

Explore

I could find RSS button for Asahi.com and the soccer cite. However, for other sites there were not any RSS icons. I think that the sites which is for the public, for example Asahi.com provide news to the public. On the other hand, the ones which do not have RSS buttons are mainly personal cites or for particular people. I also think that the sites which have RSS buttons provide new information, but sites which do not have provide information which are not neccesary to keep up to date.

Explain

What really good about Google Reader is that you can actually share the feeds with others. If the up to date aricles are on the blog, it is really convenient for the person who is writing the blog as well as the readers. The readers have chances to know what the writer is interested in, also, the readers can find their own interests from those articles.
The way you add the feeds on Google Reader, nor add your Google Reader feeds on your own blog are neighther difficult. It is just simple steps to do both. Especially, arranging your blog can be really easy.

Kahn Reading: Summary

Internet has become one of the most used technologies today. Internet is used by people all over the world. It is also used by the authority to spread their ideas. At the same time, Internet reflects the ideas of minorities. For example, after the terrorist attack on September 11th, there were varieties of opinions were posted on the personal blogs. As it is clear, the Internet is very important media today for all the people.

I agree with this idea. Internet can spread many people’s opinions, but I also think that it can influence people in bad way. For example, in Japanese society today, the online bulletin board about suicide has become a really big issue. Therefore, I thought that it is important to make some rules on Internet.

Lesson 4: Think, Explore, and Explain

Think

When I want to save faverate webpage, I use the browser's bookmark tool. In my own my computer I have saved about 15 websites I usually visit. All of them are stored in my computer, however, when I want to see them with other computer, I will have to go to the search engine and find my favorate websites. I sometimes directly type the URL in the URL box. These URLs are ones which are not so that I could memorize, such as "www.gmail.com".

Explore

I think that tagging as many as you can is an efficient way to publisize your Delicious username. It is because if you put tags to your favorate website, you actually share your interests with others. For example, when you are writing an essay and looking for the sources, and you found one good article, you would also look at the references that article you have just found. Because information what you want to know might be used as a reference of other people's paper. The same thing could be said to the social bookmarking.

Explain

To use the social bookmarking, you do not need any special skills. You just have to have the browser with buttons; "post to del.icio.us" and "my del.icio.us". You can get easily used to the social bookmarking.

The social bookmarking enables us to see what others are interested in by sharing the book markings. It is also enables us to work with a group members on-line. It also enables us to visit own favorate sites with any computers or any browsers you use.

Lesson 3: Think, Elxpore, and Explain

Think

USB (including files), notebook, pens, the book you are reading now, all of the information you need in order to finish your work like sources for writing a paper, data, statistics… I might bring my own lap top computer.

Explore

Some of the personal browsers had small screens of all the tabs, and I thought that is very convenient to do my work. I also thought that some tool bars would be very helpful to use the Internet. Over all, I thought that some of the personal browsers’ appearances are very easy to use with tabs and columns. On the other hand, some of them do not suit for using for work.

Explain

I thought to customize my own browser would help me to work comfortably with any computer I use. With one browser, I can send message to my friend by email, and at the same time I can do different kinds of work that I have to do. In order to use it sufficiently, I thought it is important to know what tools you usually use, and what tools you do not need.

Barabasi Questions 25-34

1. What is the principle of six degrees of separation? What number of social links does any one person need to be connected to global society? p. 30

The principle of six degrees of separation is that the two persons picked up randomly would be connected within six persons interacting between them. For example, a person who lives in Tokyo and the person in New York would be connected within six people.

2. How is the fabric of society today different from pre-internet society? p. 31

Now, it stitches the societies together.

3. How many more links separate any pair of web pages compared to people in society? What can explain the difference? p. 34

Thirteen more links separate any pair of web pages compared to people in society.

4. So far, what ranges of separation have network scientists discovered in different kinds of networks? p. 34

Scientists found networks of molecules in the cell, coauthorship links, and neurons in the brain of the C. elegans worm.

5. What does research suggest about the fundamentals of networks? p.34-35

Within any network, two individuals could be connected with certain number of interactions.

6. What is your estimate of your personal number of connections to society? What connections are your strongest?

I cannot actually estimate my personal number of connections to society, because it is deeply connected in many ways like school, sports, my part time job, friends…etc. My strongest connection might be the friends from the school, including high school and university.

Lesson 2 --Think, Elxpore, and Explain

Think
I am not still very sure about the necessity of e-portfolio. It is because e-portfolio is supposed to be used as showing the works that I have done for the application of jobs of university entrance. However, at least in Japanese society, it is a very rare case if the employees or universities check these online sites like blogs. It is because, first, the Japan has a tradition of showing your personal history by paper, which is called Rirekisho. Second, even if the employees or universities check your e-portfolio, it takes form of “blog,” therefore, the people who see e-portfolio would think that it is just personal, not official, site. The majority of Japanese people think “blog” as some kind of journal that is very personal. These are reasons why I am still in doubt of the necessity of e-portfolio using it in Japan.

Explore
I already said about the disadvantage of e-portfolio in “Think” section, so I would talk about the advantage. The best thing about e-portfolio, I think, is that it can show all of your works in details. The traditional resume had the limitation of what to show, but as it is online blog, e-portfolio can hold everything that you have done.

Explain
I would fully agree that the use of Internet and computers are going be the most important media, or tool, in the near future. You will definitely need to have skills of handling computers and Internets easily.

Q&A for Barabasi Reading

1. What elements or factors were critical to Paul's success in spreading the Christian message?

The distances between the communities were very long that it is almost impossible to travel.

2. Barabasi asks the question, "Could it happen again?" (p.4), what is your answer?

I would say “yes” to answer this question because nowadays, it is very easy to communicate among the communities.

3. What new kinds of maps have been made of our interconnectivity (p.5)? What kinds of interconnectivity would you like to see mapped?

One example of a new kind of map, which has been made of our interconnectivity, is Internet. I would like to see the maps of poverty; like how the “vicious circle” works in developed countries.

4. What is the 'real surprise' (p.5) that such maps have revealed? Personally, does this surprise you?

Maps could have revealed things that people want to hide, for example the Internet’s vulnerability to the hackers. I personally do not surprise very much, because there will be always risks for doing something new.

5. How does the author define the nature of most scientific research in the 20th Century? What is the problem associated with such an approach (p.6-7)?

Barabasi defines “reductionism” as the nature of most scientific research in the 20th century. The problem with this approach is that we were forced to see things only through this idea, reductionism.

6. What does Barabasi predict will be the new focus of scientific research in the coming era (p.7)? What is your view?

The author emphasizes the “network” would be new focus of scientific research in coming era. I am not so clear with idea, but I can agree with the author that networks like terrorism groups could be the important factor to see the world today.
